As the name suggests Heuristic
leaders are capable of leading at constant change irrespective of the load
acting on them. Heuristic leadership, according to Nir Golan, educational and
leadership expert, is coincidence in time and not algorithmic. Over
decades, Dr. Kotter observed the behavior and results of hundreds of
organizations and thousands of leaders at all levels when they were trying to
transform or execute their strategies. He identified and extracted the success
factors and combined them into a methodology, the 8-Step Process. He then
founded a firm of experts, Kotter International, to implement the approach
across a diverse range of organizations.
Heuristic leader must have the following essential
skill sets:
1.
Technological
proficiency: expertise in all the digital nets and tools
2.
Collaboration: the ability to
work as a part of a team, required to have a broad view of the project, have
holistic consideration and collaborate with others in order to achieve
this goal.
3.
Communication: message transfer
and transformation
4.
Global awareness: a whole world
vision
5.
Problem solving: analyzing and
perfectionism
6.
Creativity: thinking out of
the box
7.
Critical thinking: evaluation skills
8.
Tolerance to diversity: accepting the
other
The 8-Step Process for Leading Change:
Step 1
Create a Sense of Urgency
Craft and use a significant opportunity as a means for exciting people to sign up to Change their organization.
Communication: message transfer and transformation
Step 2
Build a Guiding Coalition
Assemble a group with the power and energy to lead and support a collaborative change effort.
Collaboration: the ability to work as a part of a team, required to have a broad view of the project, have holistic consideration and collaborate with others in order to achieve this goal.
Tolerance to diversity: accepting the difference
between people
Step 3
Form a Strategic Vision and Initiatives
Shape a vision to help steer the change effort and develop strategic initiatives to achieve that vision.
Global awareness: a whole world vision
Step 4
Enlist a Volunteer Army
Raise a large force of people who are ready, willing and urgent to drive change.
Problem solving: analyzing and perfectionism
Tolerance to diversity: accepting the
other
Step 5
Enable Action by Removing Barriers
Remove obstacles to change, change systems or structures that pose threats to the achievement of the vision.
Creativity: thinking out of the box
Step 6
Generate Short-Term Wins
Consistently produce, track, evaluate and celebrate volumes of small and large accomplishments – and correlate them to results.
Creativity: thinking out of the box
Step 7
Sustain Acceleration
Use increasing credibility to change systems, structures and policies that don’t align with the vision; hire, promote and develop employees who can implement the vision; reinvigorate the process with new projects, themes and volunteers.
Critical thinking: evaluation skills
Step 8
Institute Change
Articulate the connections between the new behaviors and organizational success, and develop the means to ensure leadership development and succession.
Technological proficiency: expertise in all the digital nets and tools
Heuristic leaders are
most useful in the world for high precision situations. Heuristic leadership
should be consistent innovation, effective integration of technology,
meaningful professional development, global connecting and an open mind. Even
algorithms have contexts in which they work and contexts in which they fail,
and that algorithms must be chosen by people applying judgment and skill in
uncertain conditions.
